Peacock Pajamas and a Pretty Paisley Robe

My daughter is having a surgery next month and we are anticipating a month of recuperation time at home.  I decided to make her some new loungewear to wear around the house while she's recuperating.  She likes orange and pink, so I used some gorgeous coordinates from Blend fabrics that we have at SewBaby with those colors.  I decided to try my hand a print mixing.  The first is a peacock print from the Caravan Dreams collection. Please excuse the photos- it's been raining all day and finding good light was difficult!

I prewashed the fabric so it is ultra soft. I decided to use yellow piping and topstitching, as kind of an unexpected accent. Then I accented the pocket and cuffs with a little bit of this Climbing Vines print.  It's my intention to make an entire short sleeve pajama top and shorts from it as soon as I know if this pattern fits her.

I used Kwik Sew 2811 for the pattern, and I loved it.  It has all kinds of nice little details that you don't find in all pajamas. Such as this combination tie and elastic waistband.  The elastic is stitched down at the side seams and back, and then the tie fills out the front of the waistband.  Should be great for wearing because you can loosen it or tighten it, but still have the snugness of elastic for the back.

Then for the robe, I chose Field Day Paisley and  Field Day Cherries.  They also have the orange, pink, grey and yellow, plus a little green.  I used the yellow piping and topstitching again.  I know that the recuperation is going to be hard, so I'm hoping that these cheery little touches will help her feel better.

The back is a great place to showcase this big paisley design without interruption.  I made the belt out of the orange section of the stripe to try to bring a little more attention to it.

I used Slicker Yellow mini-piping.  The whole robe and the little bit on the pajama top took one package which is 3 yards.   The robe pattern is Kwik Sew 3844 which I had made for myself here.  This is such a nice pattern.  I think it makes a really expensive looking robe with the piping.  It's not hard at all to apply.

She's coming home tonight and I can't wait to see how she likes it!  The surgery isn't for another month, but I hope she'll start wearing it right away.  This was a fun project for a cold and rainy Sunday here.

Happy Sewing!

Ann

  5. Hope everything goes well for your daughter. Your gifts are beautiful and remind me of something from Crabtree and Evelyn or Jessica McClintock. Thank you for sharing. I am putting both patterns on my list.

    1. Thanks, Anna Christina. I had a pair many years ago that I think were Crabtree and Evelyn, so perhaps that's where I got the inspiration. I loved them, but they were really expensive.

  8. About 4 years ago, I had to have a spinal fusion on C3,4 & 5. Whew! Before the surgery, I had time to cook and freeze meals and make myself two pair of flannel pajamas, which I still wear. They were colorful and cheered me up the few days I was in hospital. About 2-1/2 years ago I modified a hospital gown pattern to close in front, and made two gowns with pretty binding and snaps for closing for a good friend. While she chose not to wear them at the hospital, she did wear them when she got home, and still does. It's often the little things like this that make all the difference in moral. The gown and pj's you made your daughter are lovely/fun and will mean a lot during recuperation.

    1. Wow, that sounds like a really serious surgery. I hope that it went well for you. Your easy close gown with the snaps sounds really great too!

What to Wear in Madagascar

To be honest, I have no idea what to wear in Madagascar, and this title may need to be changed to "what NOT to wear in Madagascar" in a few months.  We will have to wait and see.  My 22 year old daughter, Alyssa, left for the Peace Corps this week, and she will be stationed in Madagascar for the next 2 years and 3 months.  Yes, you read that right- TWO YEARS and three months!!! We are very proud of her for wanting to help make the world a better place, and for being fearless in doing so, but it will be a looooong time for Mama and Papa back home. Not knowing anything about Madagascar, the first step in figuring out what to pack was to figure out the weather and the cultural norms.  Madagascar is a very large island off the southeastern coast of Africa.  It's very, very unique in it's ecosystem, and has many species that are not found anywhere else in the world- most famously lemurs. Right now, it is experiencing it's rainy season, as you can see by the

Vogue 9305 Asymmetrical Tunics

It's April and we're expecting snow tonight.  Have we switched hemispheres?  Nevertheless, I am sewing with visions of warm sunny days.  And for those warm sunny days to come, I imagine sitting in the shade with a light breeze flowing through the air, enjoying a light beverage with friends.  Just close your eyes and you can imagine too.  What would you be wearing?  Well,  I love a dramatic asymmetrical tunic made of the softest linen.  As luck would have it, I found just the fabric in the "As Is" section in Fabric Mart's sales category.  With just some irregular dye marks on the selvage, it was marked down, but still completely usable.  It started out as a solid color, but I did an ombre dip dye process to get this look- more on that later! For my pattern, I chose Vogue 9305 , a tunic with a shaped hemline, and two styles of pants (I didn't make the pants).   This pattern must be the biggest bang for your time possible.  The tunic went tog

Grey Cashmere Coat Simplicity 3672

For the past few months, Fabric Mart has had the most gorgeous array of Michael Kors Wool Blend Coatings that I have ever seen!  During COVID stay at home time, I've been letting my gray grow out, and I thought that even though some of the delicious sounding shades like apricot and apple green would be beautiful, the heathered gray shade would be the most flattering to my gray hair and the most versatile for a winter coat.  And it was one of the coatings that listed Cashmere as one of the fiber components, so I was curious as to how that would feel.
