Vogue 8522 Cropped Jacket- A Near Wadder

I wanted to make a unstructured jacket out of this gorgeous boucle to go with my Plum Tencel dress.  The problem I've had with boucle in the past though is that it that the more seams the garment has, the more likely the boucle will unravel, so I wanted a pattern that had a minimum of seams.  I found Vogue 8522 in my pattern stash, that I thought looked like it could fit the bill.  I decided to make View B which is cropped with a shawl collar.

The jacket was super easy to make.  The button in the front is just for show.  It really closes with a snap.  It is lined edge to edge, so you there is no fussing with hemming both the lining and the outer layers.

It's really comfy, but alas, it doesn't do ANYTHING for my figure type.  I think you need a waspy waist to show off this short jacket.  It just looks kind of big and baggy and makes my shoulders just slope.    But lesson learned.

If I had ONLY made View C- the longer one with the pointed collar, I think I would have liked it a ton better.

You can see in the full length view that the proportions just are off on me.  I'm not sure why, but I've tried it with a top and pants combination too, and it wasn't any better.

So, I'm calling it a near-wadder.  (A wadder is a failed sewing project that ends up in the trash can).  I will keep it to wear around the house when I'm chilly, because I really do love the boucle.

I've had plenty of wadders- mostly due to wrong fabric choice for the pattern or wrong pattern choice for my body, but I still like to try new things and take the risk, because you just never know!

  1. Oh, I disagree with your assessment, as I think it's cute and works great with the dress. BUT I'm only looking at the cropped photo with your arms held up so perhaps what I'm seeing is not what you see. I really like it - enough that I may try this pattern - but you're the one that has to wear it.

  2. Geez, a wadder? The jacket looks very nice from what I see. Only you know what works for you.

  3. I love it, and would gladly take it off your hands = )

  4. Thanks for the kinder assessment than I gave myself! A Patternreview member suggested that it's not the jacket as much as it is the dress, and that if I pair it with something sleeker, then it would work. So, I think I'll give that a try. I'm also wondering if maybe it is just too large, and if I took an inch off each side underneath the arms if that would help too.

  5. I would narrow it under the arms, put in a very small shoulder pad and wear it with something sleek. It is beautiful and just about there.

  6. I think it is perfect, but I would wear it open.
Everything you make is perfect. You look great in this ensemble.

  7. I think the jacket is quite lovely. I agree, however, that it would look better over a sleek dress. Also, I think that the color of the dress should be softer--more of a match with the jacket, so there is less contrast between jacket & dress. The collar is particularly nice on you--framing your face with flattering, soft colors. Not a wadder!

  8. I agree, it's great! I'd wear this over a sleek long sleeved turtleneck or longer slim tunic and jeans, and let that nipped-in waist showcase your narrowest spot!

  9. Have you tried it over skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. and a turtleneck or long-sleeved tee? I think it might be lovely if you wore it over something plain and very close to the body, so that the jacket would be the only soft, loose part.

  10. Oh, and I meant to add that it would look fabulous over something totally off-white.

What to Wear in Madagascar

To be honest, I have no idea what to wear in Madagascar, and this title may need to be changed to "what NOT to wear in Madagascar" in a few months.  We will have to wait and see.  My 22 year old daughter, Alyssa, left for the Peace Corps this week, and she will be stationed in Madagascar for the next 2 years and 3 months.  Yes, you read that right- TWO YEARS and three months!!! We are very proud of her for wanting to help make the world a better place, and for being fearless in doing so, but it will be a looooong time for Mama and Papa back home. Not knowing anything about Madagascar, the first step in figuring out what to pack was to figure out the weather and the cultural norms.  Madagascar is a very large island off the southeastern coast of Africa.  It's very, very unique in it's ecosystem, and has many species that are not found anywhere else in the world- most famously lemurs. Right now, it is experiencing it's rainy season, as you can see by the

Vogue 9305 Asymmetrical Tunics

It's April and we're expecting snow tonight.  Have we switched hemispheres?  Nevertheless, I am sewing with visions of warm sunny days.  And for those warm sunny days to come, I imagine sitting in the shade with a light breeze flowing through the air, enjoying a light beverage with friends.  Just close your eyes and you can imagine too.  What would you be wearing?  Well,  I love a dramatic asymmetrical tunic made of the softest linen.  As luck would have it, I found just the fabric in the "As Is" section in Fabric Mart's sales category.  With just some irregular dye marks on the selvage, it was marked down, but still completely usable.  It started out as a solid color, but I did an ombre dip dye process to get this look- more on that later! For my pattern, I chose Vogue 9305 , a tunic with a shaped hemline, and two styles of pants (I didn't make the pants).   This pattern must be the biggest bang for your time possible.  The tunic went tog

Grey Cashmere Coat Simplicity 3672

For the past few months, Fabric Mart has had the most gorgeous array of Michael Kors Wool Blend Coatings that I have ever seen!  During COVID stay at home time, I've been letting my gray grow out, and I thought that even though some of the delicious sounding shades like apricot and apple green would be beautiful, the heathered gray shade would be the most flattering to my gray hair and the most versatile for a winter coat.  And it was one of the coatings that listed Cashmere as one of the fiber components, so I was curious as to how that would feel.
